“Access to healthcare is crucial, and I support advocacy groups and organizations in their efforts to reach and enroll eligible persons.  Beyond this, I believe in further expanding options through market-based solutions that drive competition and lower costs. I support community-based healthcare initiatives that serve underserved populations and will work to ensure everyone has access to the care they need. My goal iwould is to ensure that healthcare is accessible and affordable without overburdening taxpayers.”

March was a busy month in the Senate, as lawmakers work hard to pass as many bills as possible before the end of the session. Additionally, in March was the qualifying week for those seeking office and for incumbents seeking re-election ahead of the 2024 race. 2024 is a pivotal year.

As an immigrant to this great nation of ours, I remember how excited and grateful I was when I got my citizenship, as only then could I participate in elections and vote for the candidate that I believed could make a difference. Not only did I want to support the candidate whose views aligned with mine, but I also felt a sense of civic duty and a commitment to the importance of democracy. This underscores the importance of casting that ballot. I have been a proud voter and resident of the suburb of Northcrest (off Spaghetti Junction) for almost 20 years when my husband and I and our family moved to the US in 2005.

Elections play a fundamental role; they allow citizens to have a direct say in policies and priorities that their government implements. Politicians focus on issues that matter most to constituents to gain support and secure votes. Therefore, it is imperative that everyone participates in the electoral process as policies put in place can have an enormous impact on people’s lives.

It is alarming that out of 118,079 registered voters in Georgia’s Senate District 40, only 54.8% voted in the 2022 elections. https://www.georgiavotes.com/statesen.php?sd=40 A total of 53,370 or 45.1% were non-voters. Interestingly, it is estimated that more than 50% of voters were millennials and Gen Z. Considering the significant 45.2% of non-voters in 2022, I pose two questions: What factors could have accounted for such a result? How can we motivate and persuade people to vote?

Allow me to bring voting home. There’s a common desire by communities to thrive and allow their children to reach their God-given potential regardless of their identity or status. The decisions made by our local elected officials impact our daily lives and the future of our children.  Active civic engagement which includes voting is a key contribution to the health and economic vitality of our communities.  Voter engagement has been promoted by a lot of nonprofit work as critical for community development, and for development of good policies for community and social development. And so, 2024 elections provides that opportunity for all eligible voters to engage in voting.  Your vote matters!

Today, competition for votes is very competitive and as voters, we assess politicians’ contrasting platforms and their relevance to our daily lives. Ultimately, the decision is personal and varies from person to person. Given the increasing polarization of American politics, the stakes of the next election are very high. As citizens, we play a vital role in shaping the future of our nation and state through our votes.

Just look again at the low turnout we had for SD 40 in 2022. This amplifies the importance for every citizen to exercise their right to vote and shape the future of their community and country.

The good news is there’s still time to get involved in your community’s politics. Educate yourself about the campaign process, register to vote, and encourage your loved ones to do the same. Then, come May and November, cast your ballot and make your voice heard!  Your Vote Is Your Voice!

Voter registration is the first step. Learn more about the voting process and registration at https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/

This year’s election plays out in a slightly different environment – there’s no restrictions for people’s movements and so it should ease ways for the voters to choose to take early voting or vote on election day.  There is ample time to learn and access the candidates as they focus on their campaigns leading up to the primary in May and elections in November.  Navigate the system and assist your family members, your neighbors, your co-workers, your congregation, and others too.  Your participation can make a difference in building up our communities, our state and our nation.
